While health care providers are eager to reap the benefits of implementing an electronic health records (EHR) system, many organizations are still asking, “Exactly what can an EHR do for us?” The overall purpose of an EHR is to improve operational efficiency and improve patient care.

The summer after my sophomore  year I was a “brick tender,” at a large construction site.  A brick-tender’s job is to do anything and everything to keep the brick-layer productively laying bricks.   You mix mortar, carry and stack a lot bricks or cement blocks , set-up/tear-down/climb scaffolding,  fetch tools,  and get cussed at.   Early on, I marveled that no one had invented a brick laying machine.  This was 1991 after all.
